What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise system that focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve balance, muscle-strength, flexibility and posture. It was created by German-born Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s and incorporates elements of yoga, martial arts and Western forms of exercise.

Mat and Studio Pilates

Mat Pilates is essentially floorwork on mats that can incorporate the use of small equipment. Pilates on the mat develops the basic techniques and principles of Pilates. Studio Pilates involves the use of ergonomically designed Pilates apparatus including the Reformer, Malibu Pilates Chair and Cadillac.
